Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit my website.

I am running for election as State Treasurer, a position in state government that is vitally important to California’s economic recovery. The State Treasurer is responsible for finding financing to create the thousands of good jobs needed to rebuild and restore our state’s infrastructure – and to do it at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers. 

In my first term, we met the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime. A national economic recession and the sub-prime mortgage disaster have left the Golden State’s economy badly damaged. 

As your Treasurer, I worked to create and maintain more than 100,000 construction and related jobs with good pay and benefits, and kept 7,000 critical highway, school construction, parks, natural resources and affordable housing projects from being shut down by the state’s budget deficit.

While other investment funds lost millions when banks failed and credit markets crashed, I utilized prudent investment policies to protect the state’s $80 billion investment fund, earning dividends and never losing a penny.

I led the national fight against Wall Street rating agencies and forced them to change their bond rating system to benefit taxpayers and reduce borrowing costs. We persuaded the nation’s banks to work with California, not against it. While credit dried up throughout the nation, California has been able to sell bonds at historic low interest rates.

I have consistently called upon the Governor and Legislature to pass a balanced, on-time budget. And the last time the state passed a genuinely balanced budget was when I was leader of the Senate.

I believe our elected leaders need to work together as never before to return our state government finances to fiscal health. With my experience, I can play a key role in working with California leaders from both parties, local governments, business, labor and investors to achieve this goal, balancing California’s state budget and contributing to California’s comeback.
